Sharing the Spirit of America
Sharing the Spirit of America
On July 8th, Frisco joins communities across all 50 states and 16 territories in a simultaneous nationwide reading of the Declaration of Independence. Ice cream, history, and National Treasure at the Heritage Center.
July 4th may be the day we celebrate independence, but July 8th is when the words were first heard. On that date in 1776, after the Declaration had been printed and distributed, the citizens of Philadelphia gathered in the State House Yard and heard Colonel John Nixon read the Declaration of Independence aloud for the very first time. This July 8th, 250 years later, Frisco will join communities across all 50 states and 16 territories in reading those same words simultaneously, together, as a nation.
The Heritage Association of Frisco and the City of Frisco are hosting Sharing the Spirit of America at the Frisco Heritage Center, presented by CoServ. The evening begins with an ice cream social on the lawn and closes with a showing of National Treasure inside The Depot. It is a meaningful, community-centered evening that connects Frisco to a genuinely historic national moment.
"Two hundred and fifty years after those words were first read aloud, Frisco will read them again alongside communities in every corner of the country."

Why July 8th
A Little History
On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence inside the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia, now known as Independence Hall. Four days later, on July 8th, after the Declaration had been printed and distributed, the bells of Philadelphia summoned its citizens to the State House Yard. There, Colonel John Nixon read the Declaration of Independence publicly for the very first time.
Led by America250 Hawaii, this July 8th marks a nationwide initiative bringing Americans together across all 50 states and 16 territories to read the Declaration simultaneously. The United States spans more than 9,500 miles and nine time zones, yet all of us may read those words together, at the same time, as one country marking 250 years.
